Building a Simple Content Calendar

You don't need fancy software for your content calendar. A basic spreadsheet or even a notebook works fine.

Here's a simple weekly template to get started:

Day

Content Type

Topic / Idea

Monday

Educational

Tip related to your service

Wednesday

Behind-the-Scenes

Photo or story from the workday

Friday

Social Proof

Share a review or customer story

If you don’t want to look back at the spreadsheet or notebook to remember which day is what topic, you can use a little sticky note on your monitor.

You can spend 30 minutes to an hour on Sunday planning the week's content. Then, batch your creation if possible. Shoot three photos in one session and write three captions at once. The less friction in your process, the more consistent you'll be.

If you are feeling more adventurous or have some extra time, you can work on more than one week. Facebook and Instagram allow you to schedule a month out with their Meta Business Suite. LinkedIn has its own system for scheduling posts, though it’s not as easy to navigate as Meta’s. X (fka Twitter) has a native system to schedule posts out for more than a year. If you are on other social media, look into what scheduling system they offer.

For a small business, you don’t have to pay for a fancy scheduler like Buffer or Later unless you want to be able to do it in one place.

One Content Idea Generator That Never Runs Dry

Here's a simple exercise when you're stuck on what to post: write down every single question your customers ask you. Every. Single. One.

"How long does this take?" "How much does it cost?" "Do I need to do anything to prepare?" "How do I know when it's time to call someone?" "What's the difference between Option A and Option B?"

Each one of those questions is a content idea. Answer them one by one in your posts, and you'll never run out of material,  and your audience will appreciate every single answer because those are the questions they're already wondering about.
